Bharani Nakshatra Pada 4 gives one of the most meaningful stories in Karma Vipaka Samhita because its central karma is created inside the home through beings who have entered that home in a dependent condition. A Brahmachari comes to the house seeking hospitality and remains hungry throughout the night, while in the same household a cat gives birth to five kittens, all five young ones are killed by the wife of the householder, and the mother cat later dies in distress and hunger. In another human birth the same karmic pattern returns in a strikingly reversed form: wealth and marriage are available, children are born, but the children do not survive, while the wife suffers from recurring fever. The deeper meaning of Bharani Nakshatra Pada 4 is therefore not simply “bad progeny karma”; it is the Dharma which begins whenever another living being enters our field of protection and becomes dependent upon our strength, resources or goodwill.

Bharani occupies 13°20′ to 26°40′ Aries, and its fourth pada extends from 23°20′ to 26°40′ Aries, falling in Scorpio Navamsha. Bharani is ruled by Venus, while both Aries and Scorpio are ruled by Mars, making Mars exceptionally important in this pada. Venus represents relationship, attachment, reproduction, pleasure and value, while Mars gives the power to act, protect, cut or destroy, and Scorpio adds birth, death, survival, hidden emotional intensity, reproduction, endings and transformation. Behind all these operates Yama, the Devata of Bharani, who represents limits, consequence and the law through which every action eventually meets its appropriate result. The central karmic question of this pada can therefore be expressed very simply: when life becomes dependent upon you, do you use your power to protect it, or do you remove it because it has become inconvenient?

The Karma Vipaka Story of Bharani Pada 4

The Bharani fourth-pada chapter places the previous-life story in Saurashtra, where there lived a man described as a Bandijana. Different translations give slightly different meanings to this word, describing him variously as a poet, court poet or another type of person connected with royal or public life, but the more important point is that he is described as fortunate and connected with Dharma. His wife was beautiful and devoted to him. One day a Brahmachari, a religious celibate, arrived at their house and expected the ordinary hospitality traditionally offered to such a guest, but the couple failed to feed him and he remained fasting throughout the night. In the morning he left after cursing the household. Soon afterwards the text describes another event in the same house: a cat had given birth to five kittens, the wife killed all five young ones, and the mother cat, deprived of her offspring and afflicted by hunger and grief, eventually died.

These two events should not be read as unrelated incidents because the same principle runs through both of them. The Brahmachari enters the house in need of nourishment, while the cat and her newborn young enter the same household in need of safety. In one case nourishment is withheld, and in the other continuity itself is destroyed. Food allows life to continue in the present, while progeny allows life to continue into the future, so both basic forms of continuation are disturbed inside the same household. This is why one of the strongest sutras of Bharani Pada 4 is that a house becomes karmically responsible for vulnerable life which has entered its protection.

After many years the man died, and his devoted wife followed him according to the historical practice described in the source. The couple then enjoyed the result of accumulated Punya in Satyaloka for a considerable period, which is important because Karma Vipaka does not describe them as people possessing only negative karma. Their good actions gave good results, but those good results did not erase the unfinished karmic account created in the household. When their Punya was exhausted they returned to human birth, again obtained wealth and grain, and entered family life, but their children repeatedly died and the wife suffered recurring fever. The text therefore gives us a clear example of mixed karma, where prosperity can arise from one karmic stream while suffering in progeny or health comes from another.

What Is the Pending Karma of Bharani Pada 4?

The pending karma of Bharani Pada 4 should not be reduced to the statement that someone harmed animals in a previous birth, because the much deeper issue is misuse of power against dependent life. The kittens had no capacity to protect themselves, the mother cat had accepted the household as a place of shelter, and the Brahmachari had entered in a condition where he depended upon the hospitality of others. The common factor is therefore not merely animal karma or guest karma; it is the ethical responsibility created when one person possesses greater power and another being cannot easily protect itself or walk away.

In modern life this karmic structure can appear through children, elderly parents, animals, employees, domestic workers, students, patients, younger relatives or anyone whose security depends partly upon the native. The person does not have to accept unlimited responsibility for everybody, because Yama himself represents healthy boundaries, but the manner in which power is exercised becomes important. The Bharani Pada 4 lesson is that weakness in another person should never become an opportunity for unnecessary cruelty, humiliation or irreversible action. This is why “What comes under your protection becomes part of your karma” is perhaps the most useful single sentence for understanding this pada.

Bharani, Scorpio Navamsha and the Karma of Creation and Destruction

Bharani is naturally connected with bearing, gestation, carrying and bringing something through a difficult process until it is ready to emerge, while Scorpio Navamsha introduces birth, death, reproduction, endings and transformation. Mars rules both the Rashi and Navamsha of this pada, so a Bharani Pada 4 native can possess considerable courage and the ability to act decisively under pressure, yet this same decisiveness can become destructive if strong emotions are allowed to make irreversible decisions.

This creates a pattern which can sometimes be observed beyond literal progeny. The native may build a relationship with great intensity and suddenly cut it during anger, create a strong team and break it after one conflict, train a student for years and end the association because of wounded pride, or create a project or institution and then destroy its continuity during an emotionally charged period. How Bharani Pada 4 Can Manifest in Present Life

When the Moon, Lagna, Atmakaraka or another important Graha occupies Bharani Nakshatra Pada 4, one of the first things worth examining is how the native deals with responsibility towards people or beings who depend upon them. Some natives may repeatedly find themselves caring for children, parents, animals, students or employees, and this should not automatically be read as punishment because the very field in which an old mistake occurred can later become the field through which the soul develops its strongest virtue. A person who once failed to protect may become exceptionally protective, and therefore Bharani Pada 4 can also appear in people who care deeply about children, animals, patients, vulnerable people or those passing through difficult transitions.

The same karma can sometimes be experienced from the opposite side, where the native becomes unusually sensitive to loss or fears losing those they love. This is best treated as a Jyotish inference rather than a literal statement from Karma Vipaka, and it becomes more relevant when Moon, Venus, Mars, the 5th house, 8th house and emotional factors repeat the same pattern.

For predictive purposes, one useful statement can be that children and dependents may become important karmic teachers in the native’s life, demanding greater patience, responsibility or protection than expected. Another useful prediction is that the native should avoid making permanent decisions concerning children, close family, students, employees or dependent people while angry, because a few minutes of emotional intensity can create consequences which continue far longer than the emotion itself.

Home, Spouse and Shared Family Karma

The fact that both central events happen inside the home makes the 4th house unusually important in Bharani Pada 4. The Brahmachari spends the night there without nourishment, the cat gives birth there, and the kittens are destroyed there, so the story asks a very simple question: does a being become safer after entering your shelter, or more vulnerable? In modern interpretation this can apply to elderly parents moving into the home, a relative staying during difficulty, domestic workers living with the family, children, rescued animals or anybody temporarily dependent upon the household.

The spouse is also important because the difficult action against the kittens is specifically attributed to the wife, and later the wife becomes one of the main carriers of the karmic result through fever and suffering connected with children. This does not mean husband and wife receive identical karma for every action, nor does the text justify such a simple calculation, but it does show that marriage creates a shared environment where one spouse’s conduct can strongly influence the emotional and karmic direction of the household. For this reason, when Venus, the 7th lord, Mars, the 4th, 5th or 8th houses become connected with Bharani Pada 4, I would examine whether spouse and family decisions intensify either compassion or harshness.

A good spouse can become a major protective factor by calming impulsive decisions, encouraging reconciliation, supporting children or dependents and reminding the native of Dharma when emotions are strong. An afflicted relationship can do the opposite, where one person’s anger normalises the other’s cruelty or where both partners repeatedly justify extreme actions because they believe they are protecting their own household.

Progeny, Continuity and the Deeper Meaning of the Five Kittens

The source gives a direct reversal between the killing of five kittens and later difficulty preserving one’s own children, but literal child loss should never be predicted from Bharani Pada 4 alone. The 5th house, fifth lord, Jupiter, Putrakaraka, Saptamsha and relevant Dashas must support such a conclusion before the classical result is applied literally. If the 5th house is strong, the same karmic symbolism may operate through other forms of continuity rather than biological children.

Continuity can mean students who carry a teacher’s knowledge, books which carry an author’s ideas, an institution which continues its founder’s work, a family business passing to the next generation or a research project reaching completion. Bharani Pada 4 can therefore sometimes show a person who creates something valuable but struggles to preserve it, perhaps because emotional intensity, conflict or an excessive urge to cut things off repeatedly interrupts continuity. The deeper sutra is that destroyed continuity can return as difficulty preserving continuity, and the astrologer must identify which form of continuity is actually active in the horoscope.

The number five is also deliberately preserved in the text, because the Prayaschitta does not simply use a symbolic cat; it recreates the mother cat with her five kittens. The same relationship that was destroyed is ritually restored. This is an important clue to the philosophy of Karma Vipaka remedies: what was once treated as disposable is now treated as sacred, and what was once deprived of protection is deliberately honoured.

Bharani Pada 4 and Health

The source specifically connects the later wife with recurring fever and periods of heat, but this should remain a textual indication rather than an automatic medical prediction. Bharani has broader traditional associations with reproductive and Pitta-related matters, while Scorpio Navamsha makes Mars, reproductive processes and hidden bodily disturbances more relevant when the rest of the horoscope agrees, but Nakshatra Pada alone cannot diagnose disease.

For actual Jyotish judgement, the astrologer should examine Lagna, Lagnesha, Moon, Venus, Mars, the 5th, 6th and 8th houses, Jupiter and the appropriate Vargas. If these repeat the source indication, the health and progeny side of the Karma Vipaka story becomes stronger; if these areas are protected, the same pattern may manifest symbolically through family responsibility, projects, students or other forms of continuity rather than through literal reproductive difficulty.

The Higher Side of Bharani Pada 4

The higher expression of Bharani Pada 4 can be extremely strong because the same Mars which can destroy also has the courage to protect. Scorpio can face crisis, Bharani can carry pain without immediately running from it, Venus can form deep bonds and Yama gives moral seriousness. This combination can therefore produce people who function well in medicine, surgery, counselling, psychology, emergency work, animal welfare, child welfare, rehabilitation, research, crisis management or any field where something vulnerable must be protected through a difficult period.

The lower Mars says, “Remove what is creating trouble,” while the higher Mars asks, “What needs my protection precisely because it cannot protect itself?” This single shift changes the expression of the pada. A Bharani Pada 4 native who develops this higher side can become the person family members call during crisis, the teacher who does not abandon a struggling student, the doctor who remains calm in difficult situations, the employer who protects a weak employee from exploitation, or the person who takes responsibility for animals and children when others would prefer to look away.

Traditional Remedies and Their Logic

The Bharani Pada 4 Prayaschitta is closely connected with the original karmic event. The text prescribes one lakh repetitions of the Jatavedase mantra, followed by the creation of an image representing a cat with her five kittens, made from gold or silver according to the traditional prescription and donated with suitable offerings. It further gives donation of a red-coloured cow, Pinda-Dana under specified conditions, feeding of Brahmins and observance of a Sunday-Saptami Vrata, and concludes that through the prescribed correction disease and infertility are relieved and a long-lived child may be obtained. These formal procedures should be undertaken through competent ritual guidance rather than recreated casually from a short summary.

The logic behind the remedy is more important for the Jyotish student than memorising isolated ritual items. Five young lives were destroyed, so the remedial image recreates the mother together with all five young ones. The beings once treated as insignificant are represented through precious metal, showing a change in how their value is perceived. The household which once failed to nourish now performs feeding and Dana. The original action disturbed continuity, while the remedy symbolically restores the mother-offspring relationship. This gives us a powerful general rule for Karma Vipaka remedies: the strongest Prayaschitta often honours exactly what the original action failed to honour.

A Practical Remedy for Modern Life

The living remedy for Bharani Nakshatra Pada 4 is protection combined with restraint. A person influenced strongly by this pada should be particularly careful in their conduct towards children, animals, elderly dependents, juniors, students, domestic workers and anyone whose position makes it difficult for them to resist the native’s authority. Regular Anna-Dana can be meaningful because the Brahmachari remained hungry, while genuine support for animal welfare, veterinary treatment, shelters or humane management of unwanted animals directly reverses the cruelty represented in the source story.

But the practical remedy goes beyond charity. The native must learn not to make irreversible decisions while emotionally heated. A child should not be made to fear abandonment as punishment, an employee should not be suddenly destroyed professionally because of one mistake, a student should not be discarded because of wounded ego, and a relationship built over years should not automatically be ended during a few minutes of anger. Discipline and boundaries are necessary, but cruelty is not Dharma. Bharani is about carrying something through its full process, so the mature expression of this pada learns repair, preservation and patient transformation instead of destroying whatever becomes difficult.

How to Confirm Bharani Pada 4 in a Horoscope

For practical prediction, first examine Venus and Mars, because Venus rules Bharani while Mars rules both Aries and the Scorpio Navamsha of this pada. Venus shows relationships, spouse, fertility, values and attachment, while Mars shows action, anger, protection and the ability to cut. Then study the 4th house for home and shelter, the 5th house for children, students, Purva Punya and continuity, the 6th house for animals, employees, service, illness and dependent people, the 7th house for spouse and shared decisions, the 8th house for Scorpio-type themes of death, reproduction and irreversible transformation, and the 9th house and Jupiter because the story begins with the failure to honour a Brahmachari.

Dasha finally tells us when the karmic pattern becomes active. Venus periods can bring spouse, relationships, fertility and family values to the centre; Mars periods can bring decisive action, conflict, surgery, protection or endings; Jupiter and 5th-lord periods can activate children or students; 4th-lord periods can bring household responsibilities; and 6th-lord periods can bring animals, employees, illness or dependent people into focus. The planet occupying Bharani Pada 4 further identifies the channel through which the story operates, so Mars can make impulsive action stronger, Venus can centre the karma around relationship and reproduction, Saturn can bring long-term responsibility towards weak or dependent people, Jupiter can bring children and students, while Moon can intensify attachment, motherhood and fear of loss.

The important rule is never to force the literal Karma Vipaka story merely because a planet occupies Bharani Pada 4. The Pada tells us which karmic question to ask, while the complete horoscope tells us whether the answer concerns biological children, spouse, home, animals, employees, students, projects, legacy or another field altogether.

The Real Teaching of Bharani Nakshatra Pada 4

Bharani Nakshatra Pada 4 ultimately teaches that power becomes Dharma only when it knows how to protect weakness. The Brahmachari had little power inside the household and remained hungry, the kittens had no power at all, and the mother cat could not protect her offspring. The household had the stronger position in every case, and therefore the karmic responsibility was also greater.

This is why the classical story should not leave the Jyotish student merely afraid of progeny problems. Its real predictive value lies in recognising how the native uses authority whenever someone weaker comes under their care. A person may be deeply religious, wealthy or respected and still fail Dharma in one ordinary moment, because Dharma is not proved by identity, Puja or philosophy; it is proved by conduct when somebody has nothing to offer us in return.

At the lower level, Bharani Pada 4 uses Mars to remove whatever has become inconvenient. At the middle level, life repeatedly creates lessons around attachment, children, dependents, family, loss and continuity. At the higher level, the same Mars becomes a protector, Venus learns that attachment creates responsibility, Scorpio turns destruction into transformation, Bharani learns to carry vulnerable life through its fragile stage, and Yama teaches when something should be protected and when it is truly time to release it.

The entire pada can therefore be remembered through one predictive sutra: When Bharani Nakshatra Pada 4 is strongly activated, study what or who has been placed under the native’s protection. The karmic correction begins when strength is used to preserve vulnerable life rather than destroy it.

And the simplest form of the same teaching is: What comes under your protection becomes part of your karma.
